Benjamin Franklin made an odd donation to Boston and Philadelphia
Benjamin Franklin was one of the Found Fathers of the United States. He was born in Boston but moved to Philadelphia when he was seventeen, which meant both cities were close to his heart. That is why he added an addendum to his will where he bequeathed 1,000 pounds sterling to each one.
However, for the first hundred years, the money could only be used to as loans to be given to tradespeople with which to start their businesses. After that, the city could use about 75% of the money on whatever project they deemed necessary. To access the remaining 25%, they would have to wait one more century.
