André The Giant’s parents did not recognize him on TV
André René Roussimoff was a French professional wrestler who rose to fame in the 1980s during the wrestling boom. The WWE booked him in 1973, but he achieved his greatest success in 1987 after defeating Hulk Hogan. He also appeared in some popular movies, such as The Princess Bride.
He had acromegalia, or “gigantism,” which caused him to grow to a great size. His condition also accelerated his growth, which is why his parents did not recognize him when he first appeared on TV. He had left home when he was 14 when he was still in the early stages of puberty.
