Around 8 million horses died on the battlefield during WWI
Cavalry divisions were fundamental in WWI. Shelling cost many animals their lives, but the horrible conditions at the fronts meant even more horses perished because of drought, drowning, and disease. It is estimated that over eight million of them died in the war, a conflict that humans dragged them into.
The survivors often suffered from shell shock, just like their human counterparts. So, it is no wonder soldiers paid them homage in such a meaningful way. These animals became their companions and saved many lives out in the field. For that, we owe them eternal gratitude.
