Charlie Chaplin spent 20 years in exile in Switzerland
During the 1950s, fear of communism reached an all-time high in the U.S. As such, many Hollywood stars were blacklisted for being “unAmerican” regardless of whether they were part of the Communist Party or not. Several people, like Charlie Chaplin, were unjustly punished for trying to help others.
Few entertainers were as famous as Chaplin was, but that did not save him from being persecuted. He had always spoken out against fascism and the negative effects of capitalism, and for that, he was banned from re-entering the country in 1952. Fortunately, he was able to come back twenty years later.
