The only conscientious objector to receive a Medal of Honor was Desmond Doss
Desmond Thomas Doss was the only conscientious objector to receive a Medal of Honor for his actions. His mother raised him as a devout Seventh-day Adventist, a branch of Christianity that preached strict adherence to nonviolence. They were even vegetarian, so he ate no meat during his childhood.
Although he had already been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions in Guam and The Philippines, it was at the Battle of Okinawa that he genuinely distinguished himself. As a military medic, he saved around 50 wounded men’s lives, even though he was injured four times and had about 17 shrapnel pieces embedded in his body.
