Prague’s astronomical clock is the oldest still-functioning
Mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall building in Prague is this incredible timepiece, or “Orloj,” the oldest clock in the world still functioning. It does not only tell time but also shows the sun and the moon’s position and has a calendar dial with medallions that represent the months.
The most ancient parts are the mechanical clock and the astronomical dial, dating back to 1410. The gothic sculptures that surround the face were added in 1490. It was broken and repaired many times throughout the centuries, and different elements were added as well.
