A giant canvas of prehistoric rock art was discovered in the Amazon forest
The Amazon forest is so big and impenetrable that there are parts of it that have gone unexplored, even today. That is why there are still amazing discoveries being made in its depths. This massive stone “canvas” was discovered in 2020 in the northern Colombian Amazon, and it is one of South America’s biggest collections of rock art.
The paintings were made between 11,800 and 12,600 years ago, and they depict people alongside ice-age era animals, some of them now extinct. One of these creatures appears to be a giant mastodon. The red paint is made out of pigments extracted from scraped ochre.
