Socks and stockings are not generally admired for their intricacy and beauty. These garments were mostly chosen for their practicality since they have always been prone to wear and tear due to friction in the heels and in the toes. However, these stockings from the 1830s prove they do not need to be boring.

These marvelous stockings, although made out of cotton, for the most part, must have been quite expensive. Although they were not supposed to be seen by anyone other than the wearer, colorful stockings presented women with the chance to have some fun with fashion.
