The Turkish city of Zeugma is a treasure trove of Roman mosaics
The city of Zeugma in Turkey has a rich history. It was first founded by the Greeks in the 3rd century BCE and was named Seleucia. It was then conquered by the Romas in 64 BCE and renamed Zeugma, so the place is known for its Roman-era mosaics.
This one is about 2,200 years old and it is remarkably well-preserved. It is made out of glass and probably decorated a wealthy man’s home. The subject matter depended on the room’s function. Here, we can see the nine Muses, which means the owner must have been well educated.
