An intricately embroidered boot found under the ice of Siberia
The Scythians were a nomadic people from Siberia and depended mostly on herding cattle and goats for sustenance. Although they left no written records, several caches of items and clothes have been found and were remarkably well preserved by the region’s freezing temperatures. These items show how rich and vibrant their culture was.
This women’s boot was made out of leather and is embellished with an assortment of materials, such as tin, glass beads, gold foil, and pyrite crystals. It dates back to the late 4th or early 3rd century BCE, which makes this shoe over 2,400 years old.
