Stephane Breitwieser: The painting connoisseur
This French thief is known for his reckless art thefts in the late 90s. He has admitted to stealing around 239 artworks from 172 museums in just six years between 1995 and 2001. Often accompanied by his sweetheart Anne Catherine Kleinklauss, he never stole anything for money but rather for his love of art.
His biggest blunder was the Sybille, Princess of Cleves, painted by Lucas Cranach, the Elder. This painting was estimated to cost £5-£5.6 million. After serving his sentence, Breitweiser confessed his thefts in his autobiography “Confessions of an Art Thief.”
