The Renaissance ideal of a healthy smile
The Renaissance period was supportive and, in many ways, encouraging towards the female beauty trends. Back in time, most cultures considered grooming sinful, the Renaissance took beauty and grooming by women quite seriously. There were certain standards and traits of what was perceived as a ‘beautiful lady.’ These standards often encouraged and gave rise to some weird beauty trends and fashion practices.
Great emphasis was laid on women’s hair and dental health, but what they perceived as ‘beautiful’ was way different than the modern-day perception of how a healthy smile is expected to look. Short teeth were one of the 30 traits considered traits of an attractive woman. While the reason behind this is unknown, one thing that can be known for sure is that if a woman had small teeth and comparatively larger gums, then men would move worlds for that million-dollar smile!
