Women in the 1960s used irons as hair straighteners
You’ve probably had this idea before, haven’t you? In the ’50s, curly hair was the fashion statement among aristocratic women. Soon after, they wanted to try something new, something more manageable, to save them hours with hair curlers and hair sprays. Women decided to go all out and replace the curly hair trend with straight hair.
The lack of modern hair straighteners and flat irons posed a problem in achieving that desired straight hair goal. So, women experimented with the technology available to them, the clothes iron. Although potentially dangerous, many women started ironing their hair using the clothes iron, and a group of friends ironing each other’s hair became a common everyday thing. There could only be two possible outcomes: you could have your scalp scorched or perfectly straight hair.
