Why Ethiopian tribes take pride in the scars on their body
While most people are insecure about scars on their bodies and take extreme measures (which are often strange) to hide them, some Ethiopian tribes believe scars add to one’s beauty. It is a common practice among tribes in Ethiopia to ritually perform scarification on their skin, which includes scarring one’s skin in intricate patterns that often hold a value of their own.
Unscarred bodies are ugly amongst tribes like The Suris, where women are scarred with decorative patterns, and men are scarred when they kill an enemy in battle. Various tribes use different tools for scarring one’s body, and each design is unique. Interestingly, the people of the Karrayyu tribe scar their cheeks to resemble cats.
