The optimal position to survive a lightning strike
Do you know what makes lightning so fatal? A lightning bolt can heat the air through which it passes to up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit (roughly five times the sun’s surface). Now imagine being in an open field during a thunderstorm where the probability of you being hit by a lightning bolt is high. How would you survive it?
You can either be like, “Meh! I guess I’ll just say my prayers now and try my luck.” Or you can squat as low as possible, tuck in your limbs as close to your core as possible, and huddle up as small as possible. What will this do? Well, it will reduce your surface area and elevation significantly, and as a result, the chances of you being struck by the lightning bolt are decreased considerably. Since the only thing touching the ground are the feet, they provide very little space for the lightning to find something to strike, and the impact is reduced even more.
