Taking stairs in a flood makes a difference
Who knows how often you’ve looked at the stairs of your apartment or office building and said to yourself, “Guess I’ll just take the elevator instead.” It feels daunting to climb up and down all those stairs, especially if your destination is more than three floors above. However, if you are caught in a flood and need to evacuate that building, your best bet would be the staircase, not the elevator.
“But won’t the elevator be a much quicker way to go down?” Yes, it will be quicker, but an elevator doesn’t mean that you’ll reach the ground floor safely (or reach there at all). For all you know, technical issues or short circuits can quickly take out the elevator, and you will be stuck in a flooded region inside an elevator! To add fuel to the fire, you can’t say for sure how long the rescue squad will be able to get to you because remember, it’s still flooding. So, in an emergency, the staircase would be your best bet!
