The color of this small cephalopod varies depending on where it lives, what type of habitat it chooses, and what time of year it is caught/seen by divers or researchers. Some are tan, while others are red or brown; some even have irregular spots all over their bodies. Its sandy and earthy colors match the ocean reefs making it an excellent camouflage creature.
