American Pika
The American pika (Ochotona princeps) is a small mammal living in western North America’s mountains. It is a good climber and can be found on rocky cliffs, talus slopes, and boulder fields. It also prefers to live in areas with little snow cover or vegetation. They are excellent camouflages, with their ashy fur blending into rocks. Can you spot it down in the right corner?

American pikas are diurnal herbivores that consume grasses, sedges, and other low-growing plants such as lichens and mosses. They are known for storing food they find under rocks or soil during the day, then eating it at night when it’s cooler outside, so they don’t need to regulate their body temperature by holding onto warm rocks as some other animals do.
