Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The Museum of Tomorrow is a 135,000 sq. feet site in Brazil, designed by Santiago Calatrava. It is more than a futuristic building to gaze at as it is the first Brazilian museum to be awarded a gold LEED certification. The gold LEED certificate signifies healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. It is an urbanized model of other buildings in Rio de Janeiro, and some of its key innovations are the solar “spine” roof and the reusable rainwater mechanism.

The roof of the building is solar-dependent and made with spines that move to follow the sun to maximize natural light and increase energy absorption while adhering and adapting to the seasons. It employs a technique that collects rainwater from Guanabara Bay and re-utilizes it, saving the building over 9 million liters yearly.
