Just a Few Everyday Items Underneath a Microscope

May 26, 2022 by Shelley Thompson

We recently stumbled upon a TikTok account that is strictly someone observing random things under a microscope and to say we’re obsessed is quite the understatement. It immediately took us to our junior high days of getting to look at strings and leaves and finding it so enthralling once we at least ~kind of~ figured out how to use it. So today we’re going to talk cool microscope facts (it’s a thing!) and look at some photos of stuff under a microscope because as it turns out, it’s still cool all these years later.

Way Cool Microscope Facts

  • Not necessarily as we know them today, but, microscopes, or some variation of them, have been used for over 3,000 years to closely observe a number of minute objects.
  • Microscopes work because they allow a person to see one close object, as a bunch of tiny objects.
  • Before microscopes were invented people actually thought you got sick because of evil spirits, but once microscopes were a thing, people could actually see viruses and bacteria.
  • The first microscope was used to study insects.
  • Any given object under a microscope can be magnified millions of times.
  • The single lens microscope dates back to the 1660s and could magnify objects up to 20 times.

Stuff Under a Microscope

Okay, let’s get into it. Here are just a few everyday things, but real up close and personal.

Margarita Salt

We see why you might think you’re looking at massive boulders right now, but this in fact margarita salt. So the next time you order a marg, and make it soon, take a gander at the salt on your rim and then remember this image.

Just the Tip

…of a ballpoint pen. Upon first glance, you may think this is, well, we aren’t really sure. Some sort of weird scoop of ice cream, maybe? Regardless, it is in fact the tip of a ballpoint pen, so excuse us while we go investigate.

Human Hair

This is exactly one single strand of human hair and we can’t believe it. One single strand!

Human Eyelash

You know those shows that are like: is it an actual thing or is it cake?! We aren’t typically into those kinda shows and we aren’t really sure how they work (though we think we get it) but we’re convinced this would be an easy one to do.

Tomato Leaf

We aren’t totally convinced that this isn’t something out of Stranger Things, but if science says it’s a tomato leaf, then we guess it’s a tomato leaf.
