Consider This a Sign to Clean Your Keyboard (and Other Helpful Tech Cleaning Tips!)

January 5, 2025 by Shelley Thompson

Admittedly, we forget to clean our keyboards ~frequently~ and we’re always appalled at the many crumbs we see flying out when we do remember. So consider this a sign that you probably need to go ahead and do that, and we also put together a little guide to cleaning all of your other gadgets while we’re at it. Let’s get started!

Cleaning Your Laptop

What you’ll need:

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Can of compressed air
  • Cotton swabs
  • A clean towel
  • 90% isopropyl rubbing alcohol

First you’ll want to detach your battery and wipe it down with your microfiber cloth and blow out any dust with your compressed air. Next, wipe down your screen with the same cloth to get rid of those smudges. Use the compressed air to get in between the keys (so long, ‘e’ key that sticks every timeeee) and USB ports. Dip a cotton swab into the alcohol and gently wipe down the outside of your laptop, then wipe it all down with your microfiber cloth. And voila! A clean laptop.

Cleaning Your Smartphones and Tablets

What you’ll need:

  • Spray bottle
  • Water
  • 90% isopropyl rubbing alcohol
  • Cotton swabs
  • Microfiber cloth

You’ll start by making a homemade cleaner out of equal parts rubbing alcohol and water. Next, you’ll spray your cloth enough just so it’s damp, and you’ll simply wipe down your tablets and/or smartphones. To get to those hard-to-reach areas you’ll dip your cotton swab into your water and alcohol mixture and get into all of the little creases.

Cleaning TV Screens

What you’ll need:

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Compressed air

Cleaning your TV screen is relatively easy, you just want to make sure you are in fact doing it the right way to avoid damaging the screen. All you have to do is take your microfiber cloth to the screen, ever so gently, then use your compressed air to make sure the vents are free of dust.

Cleaning Your Remotes, Mouse, and Gaming Consoles

What you’ll need:

  • Alcohol and water mixture (in spray bottle)
  • Microfiber cloth

Dampen your cloth with your alcohol and water mixture, then simply wipe down your remotes, mouse, and/or gaming consoles and controllers. This solution is ideal because it kills bacteria, and removes any built-up dirt or grease. Just make sure you never spray the solution directly onto any of your gadgets.

Cleaning Your Flash Drives

What you’ll need:

  • 90% isopropyl alcohol
  • Cotton swabs

If you’re a student then your entire life is more than likely on a flash drive, so you’ll want to make sure that small but mighty device stays clean. You can simply dampen a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and get every bit of your drive. Allow your flash drive to completely dry before you plug it back into your computer.
