A Rose By Any Other Name: Things About Flowers You Probably Didn’t Know

We can sum up what we know about flowers in just a few sentences: flowers are pretty, flowers smell nice, and flowers need just the right amount of water and sunshine to thrive. And well, that’s pretty much everything we know about florals, but there is actually a ton to learn! Flowers are pretty fascinating once you really start thinking about them, and we’re here to get the wheels turning. Let’s take a look at some floral facts that will probably have you hitting up your local greenhouse soon and spending hours in your yard. You’re welcome in advance. 

Do you have a sweet tooth that has you jonesing for a little something sweet every night? So do flowers! In fact, cut flowers that are soaked in sugar water or citrus water tend to last much longer than those that aren’t.

The largest flower in the world can grow to be over ten feet tall, three feet wide, and 24 pounds. Not only is the Titan Arum massive, but it also smells like rotting flesh. You didn’t read that wrong, Titan Arum smells like rotting flesh and is also known as the “corpse flower”. 

If you’re ver in the middle of cooking and find that you’re out of onions but have plenty of tulip bulbs for some reason, these bulbs can actually replace onions when cooking. 

There was a time when flowers didn’t exist, but it was over 140 million years ago, so, believe it or not, we don’t actually remember that. 

Did you know that bamboo flowers? If you have bamboo and you’re wondering just what we’re talking about because you’ve literally never seen it, don’t freak out, it only flowers every few years.

Most of us can probably agree that roses smell incredible, and if you like how they smell, you’ll love how they taste! (Get yourself a rose water latte. You won’t regret it, we promise!) But do you know how or why they smell so good? There are microscopic perfume glands on their petals.

You can nab flowers in just about any color imaginable, but if on the hunt for a super-fragrant flower, you’ll want to opt for flowers with white petals. 

Speaking of flowers that smell like heaven, there exists a flower that smells like chocolate; these are known as Chocolate Cosmos. 

Most of us probably categorize flowers as a beautiful things, but there is a flower out there known as the world’s ugliest flower and it was discovered in Madagascar. It’s so ugly that it’s known in the botany world as the “ugliest orchid in the world”.
