Charging creates heat on its own. Add a hot car, direct sun, or a thick case, and you can push the phone into the zone where it protects itself—sometimes by slowing or pausing charging.

Safer, manufacturer-aligned habits include:

  • Don’t leave your phone in a hot car (dashboard, console, or seat in direct sun). Heat buildup can be fast.
  • Charge in open air—not under pillows, blankets, or in enclosed spaces that trap heat.
  • Use reputable chargers and cables recommended by the manufacturer (or certified for your device type).
  • If you see an overheating alert or “charging paused due to temperature,” stop charging and let the phone cool down in a shaded, ventilated place.

FAQ-style reality check: Does fast charging hurt batteries? It can add heat, which is why phones manage charging speed dynamically. If your device is warm, slower charging or waiting until it cools can be gentler. Is it bad to charge to 100%? A simple ‘travel day’ battery plan for errands and road trips

If you want a low-effort approach that works for most people, try this on days you’ll be outside or on the road:

  • Make the screen easier on the battery: Lower brightness a notch and shorten auto-lock time. Shade the screen with your body/hand instead of maxing brightness when you can.
