Did you know that space has a smell?
The human sense of smell does not really work in a vacuum, so it is impossible for us to know from first-hand experience if the void of outer space truly has a fragrance. However, there a certain clues we have gathered through several methods that can give us a partial answer to what the cosmos smells like.
For starters, astronauts have reported smelling an odor akin to that of welding fumes coming from their suits after returning to the pressurized airlock on board the Space Station. Compounds that give off the smell of rotten eggs or bitter almonds have also been found left behind by comets.
