Some galaxies indulge in “cannibalism” by eating others
Few phenomena look as beautiful as galaxies in pictures. However, did you know that they can cannibalize each other? Some larger galaxies can pull smaller ones into themselves and “eat” them, producing luminous trails of flowing material between them.
In fact, most quasars, large galaxies that emit massive amounts of energy, are believed to get their sustenance in part by eating smaller systems. This cannibalism could eventually spell destruction since it can lead to them gathering too much material and spewing it across the entire system. This can halt the creation of new stars and put the galaxy out of commission.
