A Surgically Attached Two-Headed Dog
This one is not even natural, and there was so much buzz around it when it happened. Soviet doctor Vladimir Demikhov was a pioneer in transplants. He had transplanted some vital organs from dogs, which were successful. From his successes, he got the idea to graft the head of one dog into the body of another growing intact dog.
He performed these surgeries with his team 23 times; the 24th time, there was a partial breakthrough. It wasn’t entirely successful, yet this got the media’s attention. He even wrote an article with pictures in “Life” magazine. The two dogs were a German shepherd named Bradyaga and Shavka. Bradyaga was the intact dog, while Shavka was a smaller dog that was transplanted. Shavka’s head was attached to Bradyaga’s body. The operation took about three and a half hours. After the operation, the dogs were resuscitated. The dogs could see, hear and smell after this. Unfortunately, the dogs died four days later because of a damaged vein in the neck.
