Sleeping Beauty
Sleeping Beauty is a classic fairy tale about a princess cursed to sleep for a long time by an evil fairy. She is only to be awakened by a handsome prince who will give her a true love’s kiss, eventually breaking the curse. The good fairy in charge realized that the princess would be afraid when she awakened. She then uses her wand to make sure every living person and animal in the palace that is asleep awakens when the princess does.
Here, Maria’s version of the sleeping beauty is a beauty covered with flowers. Although she looks wide awake, she is half asleep as her subconscious is far away from her. At a glance, the piece might represent the sleeping beauty the world all knows, but with further glances, it begins to make sense.
