These Homemade Science Experiments Caused Some Inexplainable Results

April 7, 2010 by Shelley Thompson

We all love those impressive home science experiments that we used to perform when we were young. Those eerie chemical reactions and strange, undiscovered world of plants and animals have always left us wondering if we understand the nature of science at all. Plenty of groundbreaking scientific discoveries resulted from what seemed to be ordinary science experiments with zero clue about what the outcome might be. These people, too, stumbled upon some unexpected results while performing what appeared to be some ordinary home science experiments fueled purely by their curiosity. The experiments get just as creative and peculiar as the science behind them. So, let’s get our science kits and go through some of these eerie yet clever discoveries.

How this wooden slab got this ‘electrifying’ design

This piece of wood appears to be some sort of abstract art of a tree in a somber sunset, but this is a piece of wood that was electrocuted at high voltage resulting in these unreal patterns. We wonder who would have thought of passing a high voltage current on a piece of wood, but most probably, they weren’t sure of what they might stumble upon either.

This photograph captures the intricate curves and crevices that the electric current carved on the wood as it propagated all the way through. These beautiful patterns created upon electrocuting a piece of wood are called fractals, and the wood with such designs is known as fractal wood. This whole process is known as fractal burning.
