Naked Mole Rats Stick Together To Stay Warm and Survive
This is a mole rat born without hair, and it is a typical example of those that are found in places such as Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. These rodents are almost completely blind and deaf. They survive by foraging for veggies and plants in expansive underground colonies that can fit as many as 300 rats. They can survive by bundling together to produce heat necessary to compensate for their loss of hair. They have whiskers that help them navigate and locate food. They also have a few strands of hairs between their toes that help them dig.
The naked mole-rat is the only known mammal that does not regulate its body temperature by itself. The only way it does this is by simply adopting the temperature surrounding it. This creature not possess pain receptors in its skin. Based on research, this is an adaptation to its burrowing lifestyle as well as the subsequent overexposure to carbon dioxide. Another amazing thing about the naked mole-rat is that it is the only known eusocial mammal, meaning that its social structure has a close resemblance to that of insects like ants or bees.
