Slavery was not effectively outlawed in all parts of the world until 2008
Most people think that slavery is a thing of the past, but in reality, it remained legal in certain countries until fairly recently. In Mauritania, for example, slavery was officially abolished only in 1981, but no laws were passed to criminalize it until 2007.
This means that slavery was not effectively made illegal until the first decade of the current century. To put this into perspective, Apple had already launched its sixth-generation iPod by that time. Even today, slavery has not been completely eradicated from that African country.
