Haewoojae by Sim Jae-deok
Haewoojae, or the toilet museum, is another crazy building on this list built by Sim Jae-deok, popularly called Mr. Toilet. The story behind the creation of this outstanding architecture is unique as it dates to the late 1990s when Mr. Sim demolished the house he had lived in for over 30 years to build a toilet-shaped house. This idea was to celebrate the establishment of the World Toilet Association (WTA), and he named it Haewoojae, which means “a sanctuary to relieve one’s issues.” This terminology is used in temples when referring to toilets.
The construction of the toilet museum began in March 2007 by architect Go Giung and was completed on November 11, 2007. It opened on October 30, 2010. It has two bedrooms, two guest rooms, and three deluxe bathrooms. The roof resembles the opening of a toilet bowl. Haewoojae is still known as the biggest toilet sculpture by the Korea Record Institute in 2007 and has received much attention from the media worldwide. After the death of Sim Jae-deok, his family donated the house to Suwon city in July 2009.
