Lake Michigan shattered into countless pieces of ice because of the low temperatures
A few years ago, the polar vortex arrived in the US and kept Lake Michigan frozen for almost the whole winter. Ice shelves formed on the lake, and hills formed from waves crashing over existing ice piles. Once spring brought warmer weather to the area, it was transformed into a magical wonderland.
The ice shards we see here were a result of Lake Michigan melting. As the frozen lake melted, the liquid water waves below the ice sheets pushed them and shattered them into sharp-looking pieces, creating mesmerizing patterns along the coastline. The view was unique, and people rushed to capture the phenomenon with cameras.
