Not Your Everyday Cars: ‘Mutant Cars’ of Nevada’s Burning Man Festival Feature Insects on Wheels and Cars that Breathe Fire

August 10, 2025 by Shelley Thompson

Just like the lost city of Atlantis is the secret ‘seasonal’ town of Black Rock City, Nevada. Each year, this city is built from scratch in the middle of a desert for the one-week Burning Man festival. What otherwise is a dusty space of barren desert turns into a city packed with more than 80,000 people each year- with numbers increasing- who attend the festival of free spirits, art, friendship, and ‘Mutant Cars.’ With a giant wooden statue of a man as the epicenter, the city of Black Rock is built complete with everything imaginable; healthcare, sanitation, food, you name it! This city becomes the home to hundreds of thousands of burners who attend the festival, which ends with burning down the giant wooden statue and eye-dazzling fireworks. Seven days of fun-packed events about embracing one’s individualism, music, food, alcohol, and hundreds of Mutant Cars! This event is no less than California’s Coachella, and every year we get a chance to see more unique and captivating concepts of dazzling Mutant Cars. Now, enough talking about the Mutant Cars, how about we look at some of the best Mutant Cars featured at Burning Man Music Festival over the years. So here’s a catalog of what creativity would look like if it was on four wheels!

You’re still running Horsepower? This runs on Rhino-Power!

When you talk about a powerful vehicle, do you mean powerful-powerful or rhino-powerful? The massive design of this beautiful vehicle was called ‘The Rhino Redemption.’ Artist Kevin Clark from Petaluma left no stone unturned in making this giant live up to its name! Just a glance of this modified 1974 Chevy Pickup is enough to intimidate anyone in the vicinity.

As if the looks weren’t enough, the tip of the horn of the rhino frame has the ‘emergency flashlights.’ Is it a rhino? Or is it a huge dragon? One thing is certain, it is perfect when it comes to creativity.
