Insect or Alien? This Close-Up Look At Common Bugs Captures them in a Mesmerizing Lens

August 18, 2025 by Shelley Thompson

There have been reports of UFOs and accounts of encounters with otherworldly beings. Many claim aliens exist, yet all we have to back that claim are cartoons, sci-fi movies, and some twisted conspiracy theories. But what if I tell you that aliens actually exist among us? You know, creatures that look completely out of this world! Well, not actual aliens, but this is what I believe they would look like. Donald Jusa, an Indonesian geologist and part-time photographer, captured these alien-like creatures in all their glory with macro-photography, a special kind of photography that displays objects larger than they are in real life. Donald Jusa took up-close pictures of different insects in their natural habitat, and they look like the type of things that instill fear and terror in most people. However, the blend of colors, the beauty of nature itself, and the complexity of their anatomy are fascinating to see up close. Some are so beautiful that it is hard to tell what they are and almost impossible to feel fear or disgust. This piece is to appreciate Jusa’s remarkable talent and the beauty of his craft. Follow along as we explore 40 unique and amazing insects viewed under the lens.

Acorn Ant

The acorn ants are ground-dwelling insects that create nests under rocks, soil, or plant cavities. They are mostly found around the eastern United States in forested areas. As you may have already guessed by its name, it is called this because it also creates nests in hollowed acorns.

The image above looks like an alien in a sci-fi movie, and it may take some convincing for most to believe they are real. The black skin contrasting the yellow “hairs” protruding from its body makes it even more beautiful. The crazy part is that you would never know these are the tiny ants you see walking about every day. If they looked this cool in real life, I might have gotten one as a pet!
