The wreck of the Cyclops’ sister ships is one of the most famous in the area
In 1941, two of the Cyclops’ sister ships vanished without a trace along nearly the same route. The disappearance of the USS Cyclops is one of the Navy’s biggest losses as they were massive fuel ships that carried many people. Unfortunately, none of those aboard made it back, marking it as one of the biggest losses of life in the history of the US Navy in a single incident.
These massive ships set out in March 1918 from Brazil to Baltimore through the Bermuda region and carried 10,800 tons of manganese ore with about 309 crew members on board. Before setting off, they were checked for errors or malfunctions, and none were found. However, the ship was never heard from again as no distress signal was sent out, and no one aboard responded to radio calls from the base.
