Even opossums were a meal in colonial times
Did you know that opossums are the only native species of marsupials in the Americas? The weird thing is that all other members of the group are native to Asia and Oceania, like kangaroos and koalas. Sadly, even though they are a unique case, that does not mean colonialists did not eat them.
Hunting opossums was common throughout the colonies. This means that they were also used as food. Luckily, these days, opossum roast is not as popular, but people were a fan of this dish in the eighteenth century. It is said that this animal tastes fairly similar to other game meats like rabbits.
