Ashcake was a good meal to have on the fields
Ashcake is a type of cornbread that is part of Southern American culture. It is made by wrapping the dough in cabbage leaves and baking it over a layer of heated stones or sand and covered in hot ashes until it forms a crust. But this food has a sad past behind it.
We should not forget that slavery was still common in North America during colonial times. Especially in the South, plantations used slave labor. And as the slaves could not go back to their barracks during the day, a popular meal was ash cake or ash bread because of how practical it was.
