Ketchup had a very different recipe
Ketchup is the ultimate condiment for all your meals. You can add it to your sandwiches and burgers, and some people even like it on their pasta. We will not judge anyone. But in the past, they did not use tomatoes to prepare this sauce as some people thought they were actually poisonous.
It was not until the eighteenth century that Americans started to use tomatoes in their kitchens. Ketchup was a sauce made from mushrooms, walnuts, anchovies, or oysters until that point. It actually had a similar taste to a Worcestershire sauce. Not only did it taste good, but it could be safely preserved for months without refrigeration.
