This WWI battlefield in Verdun still bears scars of the war
There is a series of non-contiguous areas in Northeastern France called the “Zone Rouge” that saw the worst of the action during WWI. The physical and environmental damage to those plots of land was so severe that they were deemed unfit for human habitation.
This photo was taken in 2005, and although the grass and trees have grown back, the land still bears the scars of those dreadful events. The war might have ended over a century ago, but it changed the world forever.
