Some starfish are born with a square shape
Starfish are named for their resemblance to how the celestial beings are seen from Earth. They usually have a central body and five appendages, although some can have more. Pincushion starfish such as this one pictured here look more filled out, like pillows.
However, some rare specimens develop into the shape of a square. This occurs due to a genetic abnormality that causes them to be born with fewer points. It could be said that the one on the left looks more like a ravioli than a star. Whatever their shape, they are beautiful.
