Sperm whales are the largest toothed predator
The sperm whale or cachalot is the largest toothed predator, which means that it does not sieve its food but rather gnaws at it. Mature males average 52 feet in length and can live up to 70 years or more. They use echolocation to get a sense of their surroundings and identify prey as well as possible mates.
Between the 18th and 20th centuries, they were almost hunted to extinction because of how valuable both sperm oil and ambergris were. The first was used to make candles, soaps, and cosmetics, and, sadly, the second one is still used today in perfumes. These giants are impressive in more ways than one.
