A Ph.D. candidate snapped a shot of an atom
Although atoms make up all the matter in the universe, they measure only a minuscule fraction of an inch in diameter. Nevertheless, David Nadlinger, a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Oxford, managed to snap a photo of one.
It’s extremely hard to see a pinprick of light being held in place by those two metal electrodes. It is not technically the outline of an atom but rather the light of a laser being re-emitted by a positively charged strontium particle. It still looks pretty cool, though.
