The strongest gust of wind was recorded in Australia in 1996
The wind is such a powerful force of nature that people have begun to harness it to produce energy. This is good news because some gusts are incredibly powerful. The fastest one was recorded off the coast of Barrow Island in Australia in 1996.
The gusts inside cyclone Olivia’s eyewall reached a speed of 253 miles per hour. The previous record of 231 miles per hour had been set in 1934 in Mount Washington, New Hampshire.
