The Chesapeake Bay has put together the largest artificial oyster reef
Oysters are not just tasty treats. They also play a vital role in their ecosystems since a single adult oyster can clean around 50 gallons of water daily. The Chesapeake Bay area has seen its oyster population numbers dwindle, so they devised a plan to stop it.
The state of Maryland constructed the largest artificial oyster reef in hopes it would allow its bivalve mollusk population to recover. The structure span 330 acres and fishing has been banned in the area.
