The Mediterranean Used To Be Dry
It is hard to imagine that the Mediterranean was devoid of water. However, the Mediterranean was a dry basin five million years ago. The basin got filled up during the Zanclean flood. During the Zanclean flood, water from the Atlantic poured through Gibraltar’s strait and filled the basin.
There are many theories about how this happened. But a catastrophic interpretation is that the basin filled up in only two years because of a massive torrent of water.
