After the Moon, the biggest factor is local darkness. Light pollution doesn’t just hide stars—it also reduces the number of faint meteors you’ll notice. Suburban skies can still work, but you’ll usually see fewer than you would from a darker site.

Then there’s dark adaptation: your eyes need time to adjust. Common guidance is to give yourself about 20–30 minutes away from bright white light so your night vision improves (it’s one reason people think “nothing’s happening” when they keep checking their phone).

Try this simple setup:

  • Pick the darkest spot you can manage (even a nearby park or a friend’s darker neighborhood).

  • Face away from direct lights like porch bulbs and streetlights; consider a hat brim or hoodie to block glare.

  • Get comfortable—a recliner or blanket helps you look up longer without neck strain.

Think of meteor watching as “set the stage, then let the sky do what it does.” This quick checklist helps:

  • Check a reputable meteor shower calendar for upcoming peaks and general viewing notes; confirm any peak time in your local time zone.

  • Check Moon rise/set and phase for your town.

  • Use a light pollution map to find a darker pocket near you.

  • Bring comfort items: blanket/recliner, a warm layer (nights can cool off), water, and snacks.

  • Bring practical extras: bug protection, a small red flashlight if you have one.

  • Skip binoculars: meteors are fast and unpredictable; wide-field naked-eye viewing is usually best.

  • Expect bursts: long quiet stretches followed by a quick cluster can happen, so give it time.

Can you see meteors from the city? Sometimes—especially brighter ones. But if you can get even 20–30 minutes outside the brightest glow, your odds improve noticeably.
