Kourabiedes – Turkey
Kourabiedes is a traditional Greek holiday food known as Kurabiye in Turkey, where experts believe the dessert originated. This treat is a spherical butter cookie with chunks of almonds and has a powdered sugar coating. Thanks to the Venetian seafarers and traders, a Latin version of this biscuit, fortunately, made its way worldwide.
The Latin term was corrupted on the route there to “Biya/Biye” and “Qura/Kuru” (“dry” in Turkish), creating the word “Kurabiye,” from which the name of the cookie Kourabiedes is derived. Today, Kourabiedes has a popular cookie worldwide and one of the many biscuits of Latin-Greek origins.
