Whoopie Pie – United States
The Whoopie Pie, alternatively known as Black Moon Pie, GOB, or “BFO,” which is short for Big Fat Oreo, is an American baked confection that can be classified as a cake, cookie, pie, or sandwich. It consists of a sweet, creamy filling or frosting sandwiched between two round, mound-shaped cake slices. The cakes are typically chocolate cake but occasionally pumpkin, gingerbread, or other flavored cakes.
It is believed that Amish women in Pennsylvania created the Whoopie Pie. The women would pour extra cake batter into mounds and bake them, following their tradition of not wasting ingredients. Then, they would sandwich two of the mounds together using a smooth frosting. Although the origin of the Whoopie Pie’s name is still unknown, there are two widely accepted theories, one more plausible than the other, but the Amish theory seems believable.
